There are primarily two approaches to optimizing your site for search engines. One of them concentrates on optimizing on-page issues with your site: proper titles, descriptions, keywords, etc. The second one deals with techniques targeting off-page such as how many links point to your site sometimes called back-links. A technique called reciprocal linking, where you and another site link to one another, has been documented to have a significant negative impact on ranking. But even one-way links to your site will significantly impact your site positively or negatively depending on the relevance of the sites linking to your site.

One way to increase your relevance/ranking is to look for influential and highly relevant blogs in your industry and make a contribution to their blog. Making a comment in the blog most times requires your name, your site’s url, and of course your comment. Do not, however, spam the blog. Make relevant and helpful comments since the blog moderator most times gets to approve or decline your entry. Relevant and insightful comments will generate direct traffic if the reader finds your comment useful.
